Strategy #6: Food recovery

Food recovery

Food waste is difficult to avoid completely but in the case that the excess food is still safe for human consumption, it should be donated to organizations that connect with people who are in need of food. Donating edible surplus food requires infrastructure within your facility to ensure it is conducted safely, that as much food is recovered as possible, and that the food is able to reach people in a timely manner. Your institution can deliver food directly to local food banks or pantries, or partner with local nonprofit organizations who will distribute the food. Regardless of whatever best suits the needs of your facility, you should ensure that there is a clear protocol for how to safely recover and donate edible surplus food.
